The patron saint of Koufonisia is Saint George.
In 2008, at the initiative of the island vicar, Father Michael Sotiriou, and with the agreement of the Church Council, it was decided to hold a particular celebration on the day the Orthodox Church has dedicated to the Recovery of the Holy Relic of St George.
On the morning of November 3rd, a Holy Mass is held in St George’s church. After Mass, the congregation are offered a meal provided by the Church Council with major assistance by numerous volunteers.
The preparations are made in the cooking area, the Magipio, on wood fires. The meal is served in the specially arranged dining area behind the church, on long trestle tables, where the guests all sit together.
The menu varies depending on the day of the week. On Wednesday and Friday, which are days of fasting in the Orthodox Church, the main course is squid or octopus, on other days it is beef stew. Both options are served with potatoes or rice, with a salad and feta cheese, wine, beer and soda.
