Beach on Pano Koufonissi

The beaches of Pano Koufonisi are enchanting.

They have aquamarine waters inviting you into their cool embrace.
The seabed is not steeply inclined, so that even the little ones will have a large area of shallow sandy-bottom water to play for hours.
There are beaches extending all along the south and eastern coastline and even on windy days it is easy to find one that is sheltered from the wind.
There are also beaches for those seeking seclusion and the sense they are alone on the island – small charming beaches in the western part of the island, with fine or large pebbles.
To sum up, it is easy to find whatever each visitor prefers on Koufonisi and that makes for the contentment and enjoyment that bring people here again and again.
Below we present the more popular beaches on Koufonisi, in the order in which you will encounter them on the seaside road and later footpath beginning at the village and its main beach Ammos all the way to Pori beach.

Platia Pounda beach
This is one of the most crowded beaches on the island.
Sandy with aquamarine waters.
It is about 1800m away from the village.
This is a completely unspoilt beach, to be reached only on the coastal footpath, and there is no beach cafe or canteen, so you must bring water and food, or else walk back to the cafe on Fanos beach, 400m away.
The beach is better known as Italida, the name by which most visitors refer to it. It came about because the locals referred to the owner of the estate above the beach as the Italian (Italida), so they would say “let’s go to the Italian’s” and visitors started using the same name. Its real name is Platia Pounda.
It is sheltered from northerly winds.

Pori beach
Crowded beach, considered by many to be the most beautiful one on the island. Sandy, located at the lip of a large cove, which ensures calm water most of the time. It is sheltered from southerly and westerly winds, but very strong northerly winds will make it choppy.
There are two cafés to cater to your needs.
Near the beach you will find the sea caves of Xylobatis and To Mati Tou Diavolou and Gala beach, all interesting spots, we’ll worth a visit.
There are two different routes to follow to reach Pori and they are both very scenic.
Whichever you take, it is a distance of 3.5 km.

The first route follows the coast.
Starting at the village you take the track that leads east from the main beach, past the beaches of Hondros Kavos and Harokopou, where the track becomes a footpath, then past Fanos and Platia Pounda, perhaps stopping on the way for a refreshing dive. After Platia Pounda the footpath continues along the top of the sea cliffs. You will get further opportunities for a stop, as you will be passing Pisina and To Mati Tou Diavolou, after which you will arrive at Pori.

The second route
Starting at the village you take the asphalt road which crosses the island from west to east. It will take you up a slight hill, which affords a magnificent view. You may follow the road all the way to Pori, or, alternatively, take another footpath, Horistaria, from about the middle of the route down to the beach. It is not much of a short cut but it is very scenic.

There is also always the option of a boat ride there, as the excursion boat calls regularly at all the beaches every hour.
