Those of you who enjoy a good ramble will agree that walking on Kato Koufonissi can’t be beaten.
We would first recommend reading the chapter entitled “Day trip suggestion”. The route described is the same all along the island.
On Kato Koufonissi you will enjoy nature in all its exuberance, free from the confines human activity imposes on inhabited islands. On the way you may meet few other visitors if any.
On reaching the first stop of the excursion boat, you will notice the chapel of the Virgin. Head towards the simple, unadorned building and continue on the footpath enjoying the serenity of the scenery. After about 1300 metres you will come to Kastelli beach, located at the point where the strait between the two islands is at its narrowest, about 200 metres.
In the opposite direction you can walk towards the second stop of the excursion boat, Nero beach, a 2.5km walk. It will take you through the old hamlet, past Lakki and Detis beaches, all the time through wild countryside, up slight hills affording a fantastic view and you will also encounter Alonistria where you may want to admire the view and take photos. Next along the route you will see Nero beach on the left but you should rather continue on the way to Pezoulia beach.
It is recommended to have a good breakfast before you start on your ramble. Also wear a hat and proper shoes, not sandals, and remember to take water.
When you feel like coming back, walk to Nero beach, from which the excursion boat will take you either to Venetsanos taverna, or back to Pano Koufonissi. The service runs every two hours.
